About QuickUnits

QuickUnits is a unit converter with 552 units across 43 categories, in 21 languages. I built it because the converters that already existed did not seem good enough to me, and because I want to be able to add more features in the same field, which I have ideas for, in the future.

Who is behind it

The site is run by one person, not an editorial team. I have worked in advanced licensed pipe welding with angle and radius calculations, and in marking out buried infrastructure with map reading and geodetic surveying. Now I work in property operations, where pressure, flow, power and energy are not abstractions but numbers that have consequences when they are wrong. I have also studied some robotics, though without finishing the programme — but enough to understand that repetitive work belongs with a computer, and that such work comes out right if you build the checks first.

I am not a developer by background. The site is built the same way I have worked otherwise: the checks first, and then however long it takes. For me the main thing was that it should be useful, accessible and of help to as many people as possible. That is why I have laboured to get it translated into as many languages as is reasonable.

How the factors are checked

Every conversion factor should be derivable, not merely correct. The body text has been reviewed in five rounds — 728 checkable claims, spread across limit values, constants, years, personal names and reference figures. Fourteen errors were found and corrected. The error rate was around 2 %.

During the review I found something very important: the conversion engine had a round-trip test that calculated back and forth using the same factor, which passed even when the factor was wrong. That test validated absolutely nothing. The work of locking every factor against a documented derivation is under way.

If you find an error, I would appreciate hearing from you. My aim is that you should be able to trust that the tool is correct.

What the site does not do

No login is required. No user data is collected to be sold or passed on. I am no advocate of tracking my visitors.

The core features are free and will stay that way. Running costs are covered by a couple of ad slots, so that it can stay that way.
